Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the Chinese practice of inserting fine needles into the skin at specific points to help relieve pain and cure disease.  It is believed to have been devised in China before 2500 BC.  From there it spread around the world from ancient Egypt throughout the Roman Empire.  As travellers went from Western Europe to China, they brought back with them these practices to their homes.

The early Chinese physicians believed that an energy network of different channels ran just below the surface of the skin.  This network communicated to the internal organs and the structure of the body through the diffferent Acupoints.  This energy is in constant flux as it works to harmonize the the differing systems of the body.  If the energy becomes blocked or weakened, the effect is dysfunction within the body.  Stimulation of these Acupoints may restore the balance of the energy in the affected area, thereby increasing the body's function.

Historians have stated that "more people have benefited from Acupuncture over the course of centuries than the total of all combined healing sciences, both ancient and modern."

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Many times a patient is told, "there is nothing wrong," "It is all in your head," " there is nothing I can do, you'll just have to live with it."  The Examining doctor can find no casue to the problem and has little else to do for the patient.  Fortunately, many physicians are now referring their patients for Acupuncture.

The Human Body's energy flow courses over 12 meridians or channels that are normally balanced.  If there is a disruption of energy flow, it can wreck the entire system, producing pain or symptoms in the body.

Acupuncture's goal is to restore the normal flow of energy in the meridian system by utilizing a combination of Acupoints located on the 12 merdians.  This is accomplished by a variety of means, with the needle being a very efficient way of restoring this balance.  Cold Laser, Acupressure, Gua Sha, Cupping and others are ways as well to restore this balance.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Obviously the number of treatments vary with the different conditions and each individual.  Chronic problems generally require more treatment than acute ones.  Some patients notice a change immediately after the first treatment, whereas others may not notice any effect until the 7th or 8th visit.  It has been shown that a certain percentage of patients experience maximum benefit at up to 3 months following a course of therapy.

Some patients will experience a worsening of symptoms, as the body's energies return to normal.  This is usual and no need for alarm.  It is followed by improvement.  Researchers indicate that the usual number of treatments is between 10 and 15.   Patients are usually seen 1-2 times per week.

Patients are urged not to enter an Acupuncture program with the thought of "taking a few" to see what will happen.  You may see results after 1 or 2 treatments, but a program of 10 to 15 treatments is usually needed.  Your problem did not happen overnight nor will it go away overnight.  Give it time, because Acupuncture Works!!!
