Take Care of Your Upper Back While Working Out & More

female chiropractorIn the New Year, many well-intentioned people will hit the gym and use various equipment to get fit and trim. As a result, some will start complaining of shoulder pain and cricks in their neck and pain in their upper back.

Use Proper Form & Be Sure to Stretch

Many people injure themselves at the gym because they don’t use the equipment properly. If you haven’t used a particular type of equipment before, ask a trainer to demonstrate so you use the correct form.

Also, remember to stretch before performing any type of exercise. Stretching goes a long way toward keeping your muscles flexible and strong before you work out. Stretching also increases range of motion.

Dr. Dan, who has a strength and conditioning background, can show you how to have correct form when working out at the gym.

Protect Your Back When Working at Home

More people than ever before have been working from home due to the pandemic. While it’s convenient and you don’t have to be stuck in traffic, you likely are sitting for long periods. You might be like a lot of people working from home who don’t take frequent breaks. Dr. Dan sees many patients who have upper back and neck pain due to sitting in a dining room chair, for example, versus their chair at work.

It’s important to get up and move throughout your day. For example, try to walk around for 5 minutes every hour. You also might want to consider getting an adjustable standing desk that allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout your workday.

Stretching throughout your workday is also important. If you’re currently not doing any stretching, Dr. Dan can show you some light stretches to do.
